A Remarkable Legacy of Compassion: Thank you, John

At Kumi Community Foundation, we’re constantly humbled by the kindness and dedication of people who go above and beyond to support our mission. Today, we’re fortunate to shine a spotlight on someone whose generosity has made a tremendous difference to children and adults living with disabilities in Kumi, Uganda.
A Passion for Helping Others
John Hobbs of Hartlepool has spent the last three years tirelessly collecting mobility equipment — from wheelchairs to walking sticks and frames — to support people who might otherwise have limited access to vital mobility aids. In that time, John has sourced and donated well over 100 pieces of equipment, all of which have been carefully refurbished and sent to Uganda through Kumi Community Foundation.
John’s efforts began in local markets and charity shops, where traders quickly learned what he was looking for. He often pays nominal amounts for this equipment, then arranges for it to be passed on to us via West View Baptist Church in Hartlepool — a long-standing supporter of the Foundation that regularly holds fundraising events on our behalf.
Community in Action
Our Trustee, Hannah Meeson, who has visited Kumi multiple times, has witnessed firsthand the transformative impact John’s contributions have on people’s lives. In communities where a missing limb or lack of mobility can make daily life extraordinarily challenging, every wheelchair or walking frame plays a part in restoring independence, dignity, and hope.
We’re also grateful to West View Baptist Church, whose congregation has supported this work with unwavering dedication and generosity — hosting coffee mornings and fundraising activities that help ensure these donations make it into the hands of those who need them most.
Why This Matters
Mobility equipment is more than just a tool — it’s freedom. It enables children to go to school, adults to work, and families to engage fully in daily life. Many of the recipients of these donations live in rural areas where such equipment is not readily available, and without it they might otherwise remain isolated or dependent on others for basic movement.
Each wheelchair and walking frame represents someone’s regained autonomy — and that’s the difference supporters like John help make.
With Gratitude
Thank you, John Hobbs — for your time, your compassion, and your unwavering commitment to helping people live fuller, more independent lives. We also extend heartfelt thanks to everyone at West View Baptist Church and to the wider community who help make this possible.
Every bit of support matters — and every act of kindness echoes far beyond its origin.
